Chocolate Milk Pairings

What to eat with it. Flavor pairings that work and a few that surprise.

Chocolate Milk as a Table Drink

Chocolate milk doesn't get enough credit as a pairing beverage. It has the richness of a dessert wine, the versatility of coffee, and the nostalgia of something you've been drinking since childhood. All of which makes it an interesting lens through which to look at food.

These are pairings I've arrived at through experience — mostly through drinking a lot of chocolate milk near a lot of food and paying attention to what happened.

The Unexpected Ones

What Doesn't Work

Most things that are already very sweet don't benefit from chocolate milk — they compete rather than complement. Ice cream is the exception because cold amplifies chocolate, but a slice of chocolate cake alongside chocolate milk is a one-note experience. The pairing needs some contrast to function.

Citrus also tends to fight with chocolate. There are exceptions — a dark chocolate and orange combination is a classic — but in the context of chocolate milk, acidic fruits tend to muddy the flavor rather than lift it.
